In 2015, the Green Bay Packers selected Stanford wide receiver Ty Montgomery in the third round of the NFL draft. He spent parts of four seasons with the Packers before moving on to the Baltimore Ravens, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, and New England Patriots.
Montgomery transitioned from wide receiver to running back early in his Packers career. However, after two seasons in the new position, he returned to wide receiver for the rest of his NFL career.

“You know that feeling you get after a breakup? One you saw coming and felt at peace with, but when it actually happens, you feel that void and start to miss them. It feels more real than the thoughts you had beforehand.

“It’s like something doesn’t become official until it’s on Facebook.

“That’s how I feel about this post—hitting publish to share my retirement from the NFL.

“Yet, deep down, no one who plays football thinks it will last forever.

“At a certain point, my body started to feel different. I had to mentally reassess my situation. I had been getting comfortable with the idea of playing longer than I initially planned. My goal was to finish my rookie contract and then sign a 3-4 year extension after that. I had a plan, but things don’t always go as expected. The end came sooner and differently than I anticipated. I kept hoping for more opportunities, but as I aged and faced more injuries, I had to accept the reality.

“So now, I’m retiring. I’ve come to terms with it, but sharing it with the world feels more daunting; it feels heavier and more final.”

Montgomery last played in the NFL for the Patriots last season, where he recorded just three carries for nine yards in 13 games. During his time with the Packers, he accumulated 827 receiving yards and 849 rushing yards, scoring a total of 10 touchdowns over four seasons.
