The Notre Dame football team is gearing up for its biggest game of the season against the Louisville Cardinals this weekend, but they’ll also need to address a new challenge in their secondary. During his Monday press conference, head coach Marcus Freeman revealed that the team will be making adjustments due to a change in their depth chart. One of the backup cornerbacks has decided to seek a new home after the season.

Shortly after Freeman’s announcement, sophomore cornerback Jaden Mickey took to social media to confirm that he will be leaving the Notre Dame program when the transfer window opens. Freeman also noted that Mickey will redshirt for the remainder of the season.

In his heartfelt message on Twitter, Mickey expressed his gratitude, writing, “Coaches, teammates, staff members and supporters, I can’t put into words how grateful I am for how you have loved me and my family. Every up and down was worth it and all that my younger self could have asked for. With a heavy heart, I will be redshirting this year with plans to transfer after I graduate this spring. This isn’t risk, this is faith!”

The departure leaves the Irish with a spot to fill as they prepare for a crucial matchup against Louisville.

Notre Dame football loses key member of secondary

Jaden Mickey’s decision to transfer from Notre Dame isn’t entirely unexpected, as rumors have been circulating since the spring about his potential departure. However, the timing is a bit surprising given the solid playing time he’s been getting in one of the top secondaries in college football. Through the first four games of the season, Mickey logged 82 snaps and earned a respectable overall grade of 62.8, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF).

Despite his contributions on the field, Mickey has decided to move on, and he’s doing so in a thoughtful manner. By redshirting and finishing the academic year, he ensures that he will graduate with a degree from Notre Dame—a valuable asset for life beyond football. Mickey’s decision reflects a long-term perspective, setting him up for success both on and off the field, no matter where his football journey takes him next.
