BREAKING: Lions Sign Eminent WR from Practice Squad to Active Roster
Allen Robinson made his debut for the Lions on Sunday and is now set to become a regular contributor on game days. The veteran wide receiver was signed to the active roster on Thursday, according to a team announcement.
Robinson was released by the Steelers earlier in the 2024 offseason, ending his one-year stint in Pittsburgh. The 31-year-old then joined the Giants but failed to secure a spot in their receiving corps, leading to his release just before Week 1. Shortly after, the Lions signed him following his departure from New York.
This signing came after the Lions added former Bronco Tim Patrick to the practice squad, who has since been promoted to the active roster. Robinson, who appeared in all 18 regular and postseason games for Pittsburgh last season, managed 280 yards without any touchdowns, contributing to his unexpected release. Despite the setback, Robinson dismissed any thoughts of retirement and is now focused on reviving his career in Detroit.
The Lions have Amon-Ra St. Brown as their top receiver, while 2022 first-round pick Jameson Williams has seen his role significantly expand this season. With Josh Reynolds leaving in free agency, the team’s depth at wide receiver has been a topic of discussion, but they have several options for the WR3 role, including Kalif Raymond, Antoine Green, Tre’Quan Smith, and Isaiah Williams.
Robinson, who doesn’t play special teams, will compete for a depth role among this group. The former second-round pick surpassed 1,100 receiving yards three times during his time with the Bears and Jaguars, but replicating that production isn’t expected in his Lions tenure. Although Robinson played just one snap in Week 3, his playing time could increase soon.
