JUST NOW: Texas Recruiting Director Shocks Fans with Sudden Move to Arizona State

According to Jeff Goodman of Field of 68, Ty Larson, Texas basketball’s director of recruitment, has departed the program to work for the Arizona State Sun Devils. Larson will join Arizona State’s coaching staff as a special assistant to the head coach.

Before accepting the job at Arizona State this preseason, Larson spent three seasons with the Texas Longhorns. He began as a graduate assistant in 2021-22 and was promoted to director of recruiting in the summer of 2023 under head coach Rodney Terry.

During his tenure as recruiting director, Larson helped Texas secure top talent for the 2024 class, including five-star shooting guard Tre Johnson from Dallas (TX) Link Academy and four-star power forward Nic Codie from Carrollton (TX) Newman Smith. Texas also landed back-to-back top-20 transfer portal classes in 2023 and 2024, according to the 247Sports Composite. Key additions like senior guard Max Abmas and senior center Kadin Shedrick made immediate impacts, helping the Longhorns win at least one NCAA Tournament game for the second consecutive year in 2024.

This offseason, Larson also played a role in adding standout transfers, such as former Arkansas shooting guard Tramon Mark and Oregon State guard Jordan Pope.

Larson’s first Division I role came with the Texas Tech Red Raiders before the 2019-20 season, where he worked as a student manager. He joined the Longhorns coaching staff during the 2021 offseason.

In Larson’s lone season as Texas’s director of recruiting, the team finished 21-13 (9-9 Big 12) and won an NCAA Tournament game by defeating the 10-seed Colorado State Rams in the Round of 64. They narrowly missed an upset in the Round of 32, losing to former Texas head coach Rick Barnes and the two-seed Tennessee Volunteers.
