BREAKING: Kraken revive the Seattle SuperSonics from NBA with a huge amount of money
The Seattle SuperSonics played their last NBA game in 2008. Although Washington has moved forward, it still feels wrong that this basketball-loving region no longer has a professional team.
Today, many younger sports fans know the Sonics only from video games like NBA Jam or by watching highlights of Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp on YouTube. The Sonics also featured Kevin Durant for a season.
Newer NBA fans have no nostalgia for the Sonics and only know the team through pictures or by learning about their history as the predecessors of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
However, Samantha Holloway, the owner of the NHL’s Seattle Kraken, is working on a plan to bring the Sonics back to Seattle, with the NBA reconsidering expansion.
Bloomberg’s Anna Edgerton reports that Holloway aims to secure one of the NBA’s two proposed expansion teams and revive the Sonics.
The NBA expects bids nearing $4 billion from interested parties, to be distributed among the 30 current team owners.
Holloway is optimistic but acknowledges it’s too early to discuss outside investors beyond the Kraken’s current ownership group.
With the Kraken’s $1.15 billion state-of-the-art arena, there is already a venue for the Sonics in Seattle. Thanks to Holloway’s efforts, locals might soon have a chance to watch their favorite basketball team again.
