Memphis, TN – June 7, 2025 — In a move that has electrified the basketball world, former Memphis Grizzlies icon Mike Conley has officially been named the new coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, returning to the franchise where he cemented his legacy as one of the greatest players in team history.
The announcement came early Saturday morning at the FedExForum, where team president Jason Wexler and Conley himself addressed a packed room of media and fans. Conley, 37, who retired from professional basketball two years ago after a stellar 17-year NBA career, said the decision to come back in a coaching capacity was “a no-brainer.”

“I grew up here in Memphis, and this team and city will always have a special place in my heart,” Conley said. “I’m excited to take on this new challenge and help build a team that reflects the grit and grind spirit that Memphis fans know and love.”
Conley was a nine-time NBA All-Star and the Grizzlies’ all-time leader in assists and steals. Known for his leadership and clutch performances, his impact on the franchise transcended statistics, inspiring a generation of players and fans alike.

The Grizzlies have struggled in recent seasons, missing the playoffs the last two years amid a rebuild. With a young core of promising talent including Jalen Duren and Dillon Brooks, Conley’s return as coach is seen as a potential catalyst for a new era of success.
“Mike brings a unique blend of basketball IQ, leadership, and hometown passion,” said Wexler. “We believe he’s the perfect person to guide this team back to contention and restore Memphis as a premier destination in the NBA.”
This will be Conley’s first head coaching job, but his extensive experience as a floor general and mentor is expected to translate well to the sidelines. Basketball insiders are already buzzing about how his player-friendly approach and deep understanding of the Grizzlies’ culture could transform the franchise.
The season officially kicks off in October, and fans will be eager to see how the Grizzlies perform under their legendary new coach.
