Giannis Antetokounmpo recently discussed his evolving relationship with Doc Rivers since the seasoned coach assumed control of the Milwaukee Bucks midway through the season. Giannis expressed admiration for Doc, describing the experience of playing under him as “remarkable” and emphasizing his deep respect for the coach’s extensive 25-year tenure in the league. Doc Rivers’ initial period with the Bucks has been marked by difficulty, evident in the team’s 5-7 record under his leadership. While the Bucks were previously strong contenders for the No. 1 seed, the adjustment to Rivers’ coaching style has resulted in more losses than wins.

On the individual front, Giannis continues to excel, showcasing one of his finest seasons with impressive averages of 30.8 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 6.4 assists, along with a stellar 61.6% shooting accuracy from the field. Despite defensive concerns under previous coach Adrian Griffin Sr., Giannis has displayed glimpses of his elite defensive prowess under Doc’s guidance. However, there have been challenges on the offensive end, with a noticeable slowdown attributed to Rivers’ coaching style.

Nevertheless, with the Bucks reinforcing their defensive fundamentals, there’s optimism for a resurgence in offensive performance. The responsibility for igniting the offense largely rests on Damian Lillard, who has struggled to find his rhythm in recent months, posting below-average averages of 24.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 6.8 assists while shooting 42.3% from the field this season.

Doc Rivers Did Not Ask For The Bucks’ Job

During this season, Doc Rivers found contentment on the sidelines, transitioning to a prominent role as a lead commentator for ESPN following his dismissal from the Philadelphia 76ers. However, the Milwaukee Bucks found themselves in a bind when they abruptly terminated Adrian Griffin, urgently seeking a high-caliber coach to sustain their pursuit of a championship. Consequently, they presented Doc with an irresistible offer in the ballpark of $40 million.

Ironically, despite assuming the position of head coach for the Bucks, Doc openly disclosed in interviews that he had advised against Griffin’s dismissal and his own hiring. He recounted expressing his confusion to the team’s owners, questioning the rationale behind their decision. Despite his reservations, they remained steadfast in their pursuit of him.

Since taking on the role, Rivers has consistently expressed a subdued outlook on the team’s prospects for the season. He has frequently voiced his desire that no other coach in the NBA should face a similar predicament. Additionally, he candidly admitted during All-Star Weekend that the challenges of the job have surpassed his expectations.

Hopefully, Rivers interprets Giannis’ recent remarks as a sign of support and actively endeavors to bolster the franchise’s fortunes, rather than resigning to their fate due to his midseason appointment. The team has won their last two games and currently boasts a 37-21 record.
