Their impressive roster was built through a combination of smart trades, key free-agent signings, and strong player development from both the front office and coaching staff.
However, Seattle’s championship window may not stay open for long. With several key players set to hit free agency this winter, the team faces some major decisions—who will the Mariners bring back, and who might they have to let walk?
Mariners let Eugenio Suárez walk in free agency
The Mariners appeared to make the trade for Eugenio Suárez knowing that his time in Seattle would likely be short-lived.
The veteran slugger is expected to command a significant payday in free agency—one that will almost certainly exceed what the Mariners are willing to spend. Fortunately for Seattle, top prospect Ben Williamson is waiting in the wings as a potential long-term replacement, though he doesn’t possess the same level of power that Suárez brings to the plate.
Even so, it seems unlikely that the Mariners will be major contenders in the bidding war for Suárez this offseason.
Mariners go all-in and re-sign Josh Naylor
The Mariners are expected to devote significant time, money, and effort toward bringing back first baseman Josh Naylor this offseason.
Since arriving in Seattle, Naylor has been nothing short of outstanding, quickly becoming a fan favorite for both his production and energy on the field. While his next contract won’t break the bank, he’s still in line for a well-deserved payday.
Seattle will face plenty of competition for his services in free agency, but the organization remains in a strong position to retain him if they play their cards right.
Mariners lose Jorge Polanco despite mutual interest
Jorge Polanco has been a bright spot for the Mariners this season, but all signs point to this being his final year in Seattle.
The veteran infielder is expected to explore free agency and gauge his value on the open market, where big-spending teams such as the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, or New York Mets could emerge as serious contenders for his signature.
If those powerhouse franchises get involved, the Mariners will have little to no chance of bringing Polanco back, even if there’s mutual interest in a reunion.
