HUGE BOOST: San Antonio Spurs linked top key man to huge agreement
The San Antonio Spurs have been associated with Trae Young for months, but acquiring the Atlanta Hawks’ point guard doesn’t appear to be a top priority for them.
Recently, the Spurs signed Chris Paul to provide a steadying presence in the backcourt for their rising star Victor Wembanyama. However, since Paul is 39 years old, the position of Wembanyama’s future point guard remains uncertain.
The Spurs hold the Hawks’ 2025 and 2027 first-round picks and have a pick swap option in 2026, thanks to the 2022 trade that sent Dejounte Murray to Atlanta.
This control over Atlanta’s picks makes San Antonio a logical trade partner for the Hawks if they decide to trade Young. However, according to a recent report by ESPN’s Zach Lowe, the Spurs have shown little interest in such a deal.
Instead, San Antonio would prefer to “hold [the Hawks] hostage” with the picks rather than trade them for Young, per the report.
Since making the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021, the Hawks have failed to get past the first round in the last three years and missed the playoffs entirely last season.
The Hawks seem further than ever from being serious contenders after trading Murray to a Western Conference team. The Spurs believe the picks will be more valuable than anything Young might offer.
San Antonio isn’t the only team that appears to have lost interest in trading for Young.
