OVERTAKEN: Chicago Cubs overtake Dodger on a huge deal consigning MLB crucial key man
Former Dodgers outfielder Trayce Thompson has a new team. After being released by the New York Mets on July 3, Thompson inked a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs.
The Cubs have signed Trayce Thompson to a minor league deal.
Thompson, who previously played for the Cubs, had recently been released by the Mets.

Thompson returns to the Cubs organization after spending the majority of his 2021 season with the club.
The Mets designated Thompson for assignment after he achieved a .800 OPS, 16 home runs, and 44 RBIs in over 253 plate appearances with their Triple-A affiliate. Now, the 33-year-old will join the Cubs’ Triple-A team in Iowa, adding outfield depth to the struggling team.
There is a slight chance Thompson could get called up. Not only is he familiar with the organization and has major league experience, but the Cubs are also 43-49 and may be looking to sell before the July 30 trade deadline. Subtracting from their major league roster would increase the likelihood of minor league call-ups.
Thompson went 1-for-4 in his debut with the Iowa Cubs.
Thompson has had two different stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers, from 2016-17 and 2022-23. His first stint ended with him being designated for assignment due to injury struggles. Then, at last year’s trade deadline, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox in the deal for Joe Kelly and Lance Lynn. The Cubs are his third organization since that trade.
