It has been an exceptionally active summer for Borussia Dortmund, with the Bundesliga giants making several significant moves to strengthen Niko Kovac’s squad ahead of what promises to be a demanding season.
Dortmund entered the transfer window determined to improve the quality, depth and long-term potential of their team. The club’s recruitment department moved quickly, bringing in Konstantinos Karetsas, Giannis Konstantelias, Joey Veerman and Joane Gadou before completing one final piece of business on deadline day.
That late move saw Dortmund secure Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri on loan, adding another exciting attacking option to Kovac’s squad. The highly rated midfielder arrived from the Premier League with a growing reputation and an opportunity to continue his development by playing regular first-team football in Germany.
However, while Dortmund were busy welcoming new players to Signal Iduna Park, they were also forced to protect one of their most important midfielders from serious interest elsewhere.
According to Sport Bild, Newcastle United made concrete enquiries about signing Germany international Felix Nmecha during the summer transfer window. The Premier League club reportedly explored an ambitious deal that could have included Nick Woltemade moving in the opposite direction, in addition to Dortmund receiving several million euros.
Woltemade has since completed a loan move to Juventus, but Newcastle’s proposal showed how determined the English club were to convince Dortmund to discuss Nmecha’s possible departure.
The interest was not believed to be casual. Newcastle reportedly approached Dortmund with a genuine willingness to negotiate and were prepared to use Woltemade as part of a player-plus-cash agreement. Such an offer could have been attractive under different circumstances, particularly because it would have given Dortmund another talented German attacker while also providing the club with an additional transfer fee.
Nevertheless, Dortmund’s response was decisive.
The Bundesliga side quickly rejected Newcastle’s approach because Nmecha remains at the heart of Kovac’s plans for the season. Dortmund were unwilling to weaken an important area of the squad after building much of their summer project around creating a balanced, competitive team capable of challenging on multiple fronts.
Although every player naturally has a price in the modern transfer market, Dortmund’s refusal to enter serious negotiations demonstrated how highly Nmecha is valued at Signal Iduna Park. The club evidently believes his importance to the team cannot be measured only through a transfer fee or the possibility of receiving another player in exchange.
Nmecha’s combination of strength, mobility, technical ability and composure gives Dortmund qualities that are difficult to replace. He can contribute in several midfield roles, helping the team progress possession while also competing physically and covering space when Dortmund lose the ball.
His versatility is especially valuable for Kovac, who needs players capable of adjusting to different tactical demands throughout a long season. Whether Dortmund dominate possession, face an aggressive pressing team or need greater physical control in midfield, Nmecha offers the coaching staff several useful options.
The Germany international is also entering an important period in his development. Dortmund appear convinced that he can take another major step and become one of the central figures in the club’s new-look team. Selling him during the summer, even in exchange for Woltemade and a substantial amount of money, would have disrupted those plans.
Newcastle’s interest is still a significant indication of Nmecha’s growing standing across Europe. Premier League clubs have the financial power to pursue players from almost any team, and Newcastle have shown considerable ambition since their ownership change. Their decision to make a concrete enquiry suggests they viewed the midfielder as someone capable of improving their squad immediately.
For Dortmund, however, the priority was sporting stability.
The German club had already overseen several changes and did not want to lose a player expected to play an important role in Kovac’s system. Having brought in a collection of talented new signings, Dortmund’s objective was to strengthen the squad rather than allow a key midfielder to leave shortly before the beginning of the campaign.
The proposed inclusion of Woltemade would undoubtedly have added another layer to the negotiations. The German forward offers an unusual combination of height, technical quality and attacking intelligence. He could have given Dortmund a different option in the final third and strengthened the club’s German core.
Yet Dortmund ultimately decided that losing Nmecha would create a bigger problem than Woltemade’s arrival could solve.
That judgment also reflects the different responsibilities of the two players. While Woltemade would have provided an additional attacking threat, Nmecha’s presence is central to the balance of Dortmund’s midfield. Replacing a player with his particular qualities so late in the window could have proved difficult, even with extra money available.
Woltemade has since taken a different path by joining Italian giants Juventus on loan. That development has effectively ended any immediate possibility of the proposed exchange being revived, leaving Nmecha in Dortmund and fully focused on the season ahead.
Dortmund will now hope their decision is rewarded by the midfielder’s performances.
The club’s summer business has already created considerable excitement. Karetsas and Konstantelias have added flair and creativity, while Veerman brings passing quality and experience to the midfield. Gadou strengthens Dortmund’s defensive options, and Nwaneri’s deadline-day arrival provides another highly gifted young player capable of changing games in attacking areas.
Each signing appears to have been selected with a clear purpose. Dortmund have not simply added numbers to their squad; they have recruited players with different qualities who can give Kovac greater tactical flexibility.
That depth could become extremely important as the season progresses. Dortmund will be expected to compete near the top of the Bundesliga while also making a serious impression in domestic cup competition and on the European stage. Managing those demands requires more than a strong starting eleven. Kovac needs alternatives in every department, particularly when injuries, suspensions and fixture congestion begin to affect the squad.
The early signs have been encouraging.
Dortmund opened their Bundesliga campaign with a composed 2-0 victory over Hamburg. Beginning the league season with three points was important, but the manner of the performance also provided reasons for optimism. The team secured a clean sheet, remained disciplined and showed enough attacking quality to claim a convincing victory.
That result was followed by an emphatic 5-0 win over HEBC in the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday night. Although Dortmund were expected to progress against lower-level opposition, they still had to approach the contest professionally and avoid giving their opponents an opportunity to produce a major upset.
Kovac’s players accomplished that task in dominant fashion.
Five goals and another clean sheet ensured Dortmund advanced comfortably while maintaining their positive momentum. The match also offered the coaching staff an opportunity to assess different players, develop combinations and build confidence ahead of more difficult challenges.
Two matches into the competitive schedule, Dortmund have scored seven goals without conceding. It remains very early in the season, and much tougher tests will follow, but the club could hardly have asked for a more controlled beginning.
Attention now turns back to the Bundesliga, where Dortmund are preparing to travel to Sinsheim for Saturday afternoon’s meeting with Hoffenheim. Kick-off is scheduled for 15:30 local time, and the game should provide a more demanding examination of the team’s progress.
Hoffenheim will be determined to disrupt Dortmund’s rhythm and use home advantage to make the contest uncomfortable. Kovac’s side must therefore maintain the concentration and defensive organisation displayed in their opening two matches.
Another victory would strengthen the feeling that Dortmund’s summer rebuild is beginning to produce immediate results. It would also allow the club to maintain momentum during the early stage of a Bundesliga campaign in which every dropped point could become important.
Kovac will want his players to show that their impressive opening performances were not simply the product of favourable circumstances. The challenge is to produce the same intensity, control and efficiency against stronger opposition and in less comfortable situations.
Nmecha could play a central role in that effort.
After Dortmund rejected Newcastle’s approach, the midfielder knows he has the confidence of both the club and his manager. That support also brings increased responsibility. Dortmund have effectively made it clear that they regard him as more valuable to their sporting project than the opportunity to receive a replacement player and additional millions.
He must now justify that faith on the pitch.
If Nmecha can remain healthy and perform consistently, Dortmund’s decision may prove to be one of the most important pieces of business they completed all summer. Transfer windows are often judged by the players a club signs, but keeping an essential member of the squad can be equally valuable.
Newcastle’s willingness to offer Woltemade and money underlined the seriousness of their pursuit. Dortmund could have been tempted by the financial package or by the chance to add another promising attacker. Instead, the club prioritised continuity, midfield balance and Kovac’s tactical vision.
That position sends a clear message about Dortmund’s ambitions.
Following a busy recruitment campaign, the club did not want to undo its progress by allowing one of its leading midfielders to leave. Dortmund believe they have assembled a squad capable of competing strongly this season, and Nmecha is considered an important part of that project.
The coming months will ultimately determine whether the club’s summer decisions were correct. New signings must settle, young players must adapt, and established members of the squad must respond to the increased competition for places.
For now, however, Dortmund appear to be moving in the right direction.
Several exciting arrivals have strengthened Kovac’s options, Newcastle’s attempt to sign Nmecha was firmly rejected, and the team has opened its competitive campaign with two victories, seven goals and consecutive clean sheets.
Saturday’s trip to Hoffenheim represents the next step. If Dortmund can extend their winning start in Sinsheim, optimism around Signal Iduna Park will continue to grow—and the decision to keep Nmecha at the centre of the club’s plans could look increasingly significant.
