The Boston Red Sox’s farm system is stacked with talented players that play well together. This will likely continue until 2024. Boston’s top prospects, known as the “Big Three,” all advanced up the organization’s tiers on Sunday. According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, and Kyle Teel will move from Double-A (Portland Sea Dogs) to Triple-A (Worcester Red Sox). The trio is all ranked among MLB.com’s top 25 prospects. None have ever achieved the AAA level.

Red Sox “Big Three” Prospects Move To Triple-A

The three have had a tremendous season, rocketing up the prospect rankings. In 2024, Portland was recognised as baseball’s third-best minor league team. Mayer, Anthony, and Teel, all of whom have advanced much, deserve much of the credit. Four of Boston’s top five prospects started the season with the Sea Dogs. The sole remaining player is right-handed pitcher Wikelman Gonzalez (No. 5).

Marcelo Mayer – SS – MLB’s #6 Prospect

Mayer leads the group being promoted to Triple-A. The 21-year-old has excelled in his minor league career so far. Drafted fourth overall in the 2021 MLB draft out of high school, Mayer reached Double-A in 2023. After a challenging season last year, he broke out in 2024, hitting .307 with an .850 OPS and 28 doubles with the Sea Dogs. Despite a recent injury that sidelined him for less than two weeks, he participated in the All-Star Futures Game, representing the American League.

Mayer is currently ranked as the sixth-best prospect in baseball. Among those ranked higher, Jackson Holliday (Baltimore Orioles) has already reached MLB. Three of the top six prospects are from the AL East, with Holliday leading and Junior Caminero (Tampa Bay Rays) ranked second. Mayer is the third-highest-ranked infielder and is at his highest ranking ever by MLB.

Roman Anthony – OF – MLB’s #13 Prospect

Anthony, the Red Sox’s second-ranked prospect and the 79th pick in the 2022 MLB draft, had a slow start to 2024, hitting just .219 as of May 10. However, the 20-year-old turned things around, raising his average to .267 by mid-June and hitting .284 in July. He’s been on a tear in his last ten games, with 18 hits, 11 RBIs, and four home runs. In Double-A this year, Anthony slashed .269/.367/.489 with 15 home runs.

As of Sunday, Anthony is ranked as the No. 13 prospect in baseball, the highest of his career. Only three outfielders are ranked above him: Dylan Crews (Washington Nationals), Walker Jenkins (Minnesota Twins), and Max Clark (Detroit Tigers). Anthony’s rise contributes to Boston being one of five MLB teams with multiple players in the top 15 prospects. He capped off his time with Portland by hitting a game-winning home run in his final at-bat.

Kyle Teel – C – MLB’s #23 Prospect

Teel completes the trio of Red Sox prospects advancing to Worcester. Unlike his counterparts, he has collegiate experience, having spent three years at the University of Virginia. Drafted 14th overall in the 2023 MLB draft, Teel quickly made his mark in the minors, playing across three levels last season and batting .363 over 26 games. Continuing his momentum into 2024, he appeared in 84 games for the Sea Dogs, hitting .298 with 11 home runs, 60 RBIs, and 20 doubles. He’s been particularly impressive in August, boasting a 1.032 OPS over 30 at-bats.

With Teel’s ascent, Boston becomes one of only three teams featuring three top-25 prospects. Currently ranked as the fifth-best catcher, behind leaders like Ethan Salas (San Diego Padres), Teel has climbed nearly 20 spots from his initial #40 ranking at the start of 2024. His promotion to Triple-A marks his fourth level in just 110 minor league games.
