Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Used Clippers Trading Him To Thunder For Paul George As ‘Motivation’ To Become Superstar

In an interview with NBA journalist Tim MacMahon of ESPN, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander acknowledged that being traded from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Paul George served as “inspiration” for him to elevate his game to superstar status.

The trade, which occurred in July 2019, saw Gilgeous-Alexander and multiple draft picks heading to the Thunder in exchange for George. Reflecting on the trade, Gilgeous-Alexander admitted, “I didn’t anticipate it happening,” and expressed understanding, noting George’s stellar performance the previous season. He used the trade as a catalyst to improve and reach George’s level of play.

Currently, Gilgeous-Alexander stands out as one of the NBA’s premier players. He boasts impressive statistics, averaging 31.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 2.2 steals, and 0.9 blocks per game this season, with notable shooting percentages.

Despite acquiring George and signing Kawhi Leonard in the same summer, the Clippers have yet to make it to the Finals during their tenure. Meanwhile, the Thunder possess a talented roster including Gilgeous-Alexander, alongside promising players like Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, Luguentz Dort, and Josh Giddey, along with a wealth of future draft picks acquired from the George trade.

Both sides seem content with the outcome of the trade. George expressed gratitude to the Clippers for their commitment, emphasizing mutual appreciation for the deal’s execution.

With the Clippers currently holding a 36-17 record and the Thunder close behind at 37-17, both teams are performing well in the Western Conference. Gilgeous-Alexander highlighted the team’s focus on staying present and committed to continuous improvement as the keys to their success.
