The Green Bay Packers have one of the youngest groups of homegrown wide receivers in the NFL, and that group just got even stronger—and potentially more dynamic—after they picked Matthew Golden in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
“That selection was all about adding speed,” a rival NFC executive told me about the Packers choosing Golden. “Green Bay is gearing up to attack vertically.”
The Packers are banking on Golden’s blazing 4.29-second speed and his 17 yards per catch average at Texas to boost Jordan Love and their vertical passing game, especially coming off a season where they led the league in explosive plays.
But Golden’s arrival might also mean the end of the road in Green Bay for one of the team’s other young receivers.
Could the Green Bay Packers Release Romeo Doubs?

Bleacher Report’s Krisopher Knox compiled a list of the top players on every NFL team who could be cut before the 2025 season, naming Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs as a likely candidate to be released.
“The Green Bay Packers are very likely to move on from one of their young veteran receivers,” Knox writes. “After using two of their first three draft picks on Matthew Golden and Savion Williams, Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs—both entering contract years—are the most probable candidates to be let go.
“While Doubs has arguably been the more consistent option, his 2025 cap hit is also higher. Watson is recovering from a torn ACL and might spend the season on injured reserve anyway, so cutting Doubs could save Green Bay \$3.4 million in cap space.”

Doubling down on Golden and Williams doesn’t look promising for Doubs, who caught 46 passes for 601 yards and four touchdowns in 13 games last season.
Still, at 6-foot-2 and 204 pounds, Doubs has the size to serve as a reliable red-zone and possession receiver for Jordan Love, who posted a 99.8 passer rating when targeting him.
Although Doubs and the Packers’ receiving corps as a whole struggled in 2024, the \$3.4 million saved by cutting him could be used to address other team needs, such as adding a pass rusher. That said, Doubs may still start the season as a leading receiver for Green Bay.
Ultimately, how quickly Golden and Williams prove their productivity—and how well players like Reed and Wicks perform during the offseason—could decide Doubs’ future with the Packers.
