Over the last month, the St. Louis Cardinals have undergone significant transformation. The Cardinals will probably see even more changes in the summer, from the return of injured starters to the departure of three relievers.

However, one pitcher who was recalled midway through the 2025 season is taking full use of their situation in the starting rotation. According to Redbird Rants’ Miranda Remaklus, Michael McGreevy, a 25-year-old starter for the Cardinals, is “taking full advantage of their runway post trade deadline.”
“McGreevy has been the most patient member of the St. Louis Cardinals since his final start of the e2024 season,” says Remaklus. He deserved a position on the Cardinals’ roster, but a backlog of pitchers prevented him from securing it.
However, the young Cardinals starter was made possible by Erick Fedde’s trade to the Atlanta Braves. Getting him a longer stint in the Majors is crucial for his growth as he is a key component of the team’s future goals.
Even if the young starter hasn’t been blowing everyone away this season, he still has potential. In May, he defeated the New York Mets in 5.2 innings, earning his first start of 2025. However, he didn’t start again until June, which was almost a month later.

McGreevy has made eight starts since the start of June and has a 4.96 ERA in 45.1 innings pitched, with 23 strikeouts and six walks. Despite limiting walks, he has given up four home runs and has poor strikeout percentages.

If there’s one positive aspect of this run, it’s his 3.71 FIP, which suggests that if it weren’t for terrible defensive performance and bad luck in the field, his ERA may be lower. However, McGreevy’s ERA is still too high, and lowering it in the last month and a half of 2025 would be a smart move going into 2026.
Given that Miles Mikolas is probably going to leave in the winter, McGreevy will be a key member of the starting lineup moving forward. He still has a lot of time to learn the ropes in the Major Leagues at the age of 25.

Even though he doesn’t have the finest numbers, he has been a reliable starter and might contribute to the rotation. McGreevy’s 1.96 ERA in three starts in 2024 was encouraging, and he shouldn’t have any trouble returning to that level of play.
There is reason to be enthusiastic about the flare he has displayed throughout his career, and McGreevy is seizing the chance following the Fedde deal.
